Slow, mellow music has filled my iTunes playlist this evening. No particular reason; it just seems to go better with the early spring evening. Any other night it might be something a bit more high energy, but that just does not fit the atmosphere. My time away from work has become a somewhat predictable routine of reading e-mails from friends, family, political campaigns, news alerts and various other random pieces of fact and fiction. I diverge a bit to play on our Wii or take in a strategy game on my Mac.

Mellow guitar and piano calms such heavy things as the soul. A few years ago, this would have been a cause for alarm; a panic seeking to restore a much faster tempo to life’s daily events. Now it is small comfort that the need for excitement is easily tamed. The nightly telecast brings news of a faltering economy and scandal both upsetting and trivial all at once. Perhaps in times such as these, the calm and mellow music is a safe retreat to collect one’s thoughts.
