My Trash folder has more stuff in it than my Inbox this evening, so I believe it is time to share some guidelines for things I will actually read, and what gets tossed before I even bother to open the message.
Things I am interested in hearing about:
- Petitions or open letters to contact my elected officials about:
- Ending conflicts in foreign lands.
- Promoting responsible government.
- Protecting civil rights and promoting equality.
- Reducing the cost of higher education.
- Improving the quality of life in Nashville, Tenn.
- News reports pertaining to the above issues.
- News from my alma mater or about my college fraternity.
- Updates of what friends, family and colleagues are doing.
Things I will not pay any attention to:
- Superstitious chain letters.
- Promises of getting rich quick.
- Anything dealing with religion or patriotism.
- Cute animals (unless they are yours).
- Cute children (again, unless they are yours).
- Surveys that do not pertain to my occupation or industry.
- Online games that rewards points for the more suckers you enlist.
- Inspirational quotes lifted from the Internet.
- Poetry or irrelevant short stories.
Of course, it is not my goal to patronize. I am simply sharing my criteria for judging the worthiness of an e-mail or other kind of message. I am sure these will change over time, but try to keep them in mind before hitting "Send".
