Headlines this morning are filled with reports that "Newsweek got it wrong" on reports of officials in the United States military community desecrating the Qur'an in the detention camps in Guantánamo Bay. Many stories go on to say that it was because of this publication, particularly that segment, that angry mobs have filled the streets of the cities of Afghanistan, burned buildings, and other forms of social and political unrest.
Newsweek would later retract the report, but stand behind the approach taken to obtain the information. I'm sure we'll be hearing about the fallout from this for quite some time, but I'll go ahead and predict how it will transpire.
The magazine will become the scapegoat for all that is wrong in the region. In justifying the reason for why the story was even followed, Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas said:
Given all that has been reported about the treatment of detaineesâ€"including allegations that a female interrogator pretended to wipe her own menstrual blood on one prisonerâ€"the reports of Qur'an desecration seemed shocking but not incredible.
Let's take your typical supporter for the U.S. offensive(s). If we were to ask them these questions, here would be their responses.
SY: What happened here?
WS: Countless* Americans have lost their lives because the liberal media has sensationalized events that probably didn't even happen.SY: What about the reports from the American Red Cross and other humanitarian agencies that say prisoner mistreatment runs rampant?
WS: Same problem. The prison abuse scandal should have never made it to the airwaves. Think of how many soldiers found themselves fighting new enemies because of it?SY: So it should have been a "cover up"?
WS: We have to give up certain freedoms to protect our own. Did you really need to know about all of that? It should have been handled internally and the American public did not have to know.SY: Final thoughts?
WS: I think the media has cost us this war, and caused too many left-wing sympathizers to quit supporting our justified war.*CNN reports four deaths confirmed, Newsweek itself alleges up to 15. Their nationalities are unknown.
