The semester is drawing to a close, and it looks like this one will not go without a fight. Samantha woke up this morning doubled over from mysterious abdominal and back pain. A trip to Student Health netted her some antacid and mild pain medication. By noon, it was apparent that the medicine wasn't helping, so it was off to the emergency room. She's resting right now while I wrap-up a few loose ends in the office.
I don't like doctors. No offense to anyone who is consider the profession, but the thought that human beings have the audacity to think that they can diagnose and cure an ailment by only spending 10 minutes with a patient concerns me. Misdiagnosis happens all the time, and it is for that reason I typically wait until I'm inoperable before trudging to even a clinician. The only exception I make to this rule is when I do something stupid and break a bone or tear up muscle tissue. I figure at that point, it's pretty obvious the problem and solution.
I'm sure Samantha's not thrilled that I tried to apply this kind of logic this morning and afternoon when I was discounting her agony. I kept hoping that it would just subside, and she could rest comfortably again. Without really thinking, I said something to the effect of "I have an extra-credit quiz in music," as a reason for not wanting to run her to the hospital. I should really be a little more sensitive to things like that.
The doctors say it's a stomach virus that's going around, and to eat bland foods for the next few days. I hope when I get over to her place later on she's feeling a little better.
Two more issues of the newspaper lie ahead, with the next to the last's docket set earlier today. It looks full, but it always seems to hold true that we assign 20 stories, and only seven come in. Go figure. I guess since we don't pay our staff writers, they just treat it as "optional homework."
At any rate, I'm finally going through the Brother Mentor Rite later today, so I can finally be considered an "old guy." I guess the next step is to work on the whole reason I'm in college: to get a degree. I feel like I haven't let go of the proverbial wheel this semester, but I have certainly taken my eyes off the road. Maybe I can keep it from going in a ditch if I buckle down these last two weeks. One can only hope.
Anybody know of a good place to rent near campus?
