Like any good journalism student, I'll lead off with the hot news first.
The Pacer is pleased to announce that the Southeast Journalism Conference recently awarded our newspaper eighth overall out of more than 30 schools in the southeast.
Members of our staff also received individual awards for their accomplishments in the past year.
- Stephen Yeargin received fifth overall as "Best Page Layout Designer" and third in the on-site competition.
- Samantha Young received eighth overall as "Best News Graphic Designer" and first in the on-site competition.
- Will York received fifth place overall as "Best Special Events Reporter/Editor."
- Kevin Teets tied for eighth overall as "Best News Reporter."
- Amy Eddings received an honorable mention in the personal column on-site competition.
I'm not ever really one give a lot of credit, but it made me very happy that we won something for writing, even twice. I know that I've worked with a lot of great writers, but the last few years have been very disappointing in that regard. This is the first time in God knows how long that we've won something for content as opposed to presentation.
Notice the Web site isn't listed. Guess they don't just give that one away anymore.
Speaking of Web sites, I upgraded a few days ago to WordPress 1.5. My reaction is mixed, as my template is screwed, I can't get half of my plug-ins to work, and there are configuration errors that pop up every now and then. I'll take a wait and see attitude with this one.
Update: That's my reaction. Screw that, maybe when I have a lot more time on my hands. I might just hold my breath for a 2.0.
