If you work on campus, then chances are you are eligible to have an @tennessee.edu address. This in great if you don't want to have to give out your boring @mars.utm.edu address. Let's face it, who wants to admit they're from Mars.

Step 1 -- Find your NetID

The first thing to do is to figure out what exactly your UT NetID is. To do so, visit the directory at http://directory.utk.edu/ and search for your name, first and last. After tracking down your account, write down the NetID that is listed in the upper right corner of your profile page. You will need this later.

Step 2 -- Create your UTK Inbox

In order to obtain your @tennessee.edu address, you must first have a UTK box for it to point to. To do so, visit http://accounts.utk.edu/register/ to register for your e-mail account. You will be prompted for your NetID (obtained in Step 1) and a password.

Your password is (all together):
- The first two letters of your birth month in lower case.
- The last two digits of your birth year.
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number.

The system may prompt you to create a new password. It is a pain to do, but make sure it is long enough and using both letters and numbers. Write it down if you create a new one. After completing the registration process, go grab a sandwich. It takes up to thirty minutes for the entire system to synchronize with your account.

Step 3 -- Set your forwarding address

Unless you particularly want to check yet another e-mail account, you need to set it up to send your messages to your primary account. This can any e-mail account you have access to. Visit http://accounts.utk.edu/uact/ and click the "Manage Your E-mail Account" link. After logging in, click the "Forwarding" button at the bottom of the page. Enable forwarding, enter your e-mail, and click "Apply." This will take up to 10 minutes to go into effect.

Step 4 -- Get your @tennessee.edu address

Now that you've got the e-mail working (assuming that you've tested it a few times), go back to http://directory.utk.edu/ and click "Change E-mail Address" on the left menu bar. Enter your NetID to verify that you have one, then log in using your NetID and password created during the registration process (if it was changed). After logging in, enter your e-mail address that you want to use in the "Aliases" field. For example, if your name was John Doe, you might want:

john.doe@tennessee.edu
johndoe@tennessee.edu

Important: Make sure you end the addreses with @tennessee.edu.

That should be the last step. Test it by sending an e-mail from one of your accounts to your @tennessee.edu account. If you receive it, congratulations. If not, double check your settings in the steps above. Since I do not work for the Office of Information Technology, I can't really help you if something goes screwy. If you try to call them, they may berate you for being a UTM student trying to use a UTK system. You have been warned.
